open heart (blog)

So… why hearts?

Throughout human history, our beating, bleeding hearts have come to symbolize everything from divine compassion to sacrifice and suffering.
Ancient and modern belief systems around the globe have revered the heart as the embodiment of love, the source of emotion, family bloodlines, or our entire life force.

My personal obsession began after a very specific tragedy. In mid-December of 2011, my son Orion was born still.
When I was pregnant, I was so in awe of the idea of having 2 beating hearts. My body had created a second heart and life was forming around it.
Losing that second heartbeat triggered by current obsession with creating hearts non-stop.

The visceral experiences people have when looking at images of the human heart are as varied as the humans themselves. Like different color combinations or flavors of music, everyone seems to find different meaning in the heart images I create.
Comfort, commemoration. beauty, passion, ancestral wisdom, love, loss… it’s all there in the endless wild , weird and wonderful colors of the heart.

I find that there really is no end to what the heart can communicate.
